Exterior work here means nonstructural surfaces and boundaries: deck surfaces and railings, patios, ground cover like gravel and mulch, fencing, and garden structures such as planter boxes and raised beds. It stops well short of anything load-bearing or safety-critical.
What an exterior planning decision usually involves
Exterior surface and boundary projects tend to add one layer of planning that interior work does not: a base or foundation material, a run-and-bay layout, or a depth-dependent volume, on top of the same purchase-quantity and comparison questions that apply indoors. A patio needs a paver quantity and a separate base material calculation. A fence needs a run length converted into bays, posts, and gate openings before any material count makes sense. A raised bed needs both a lumber cut list and a fill volume. The specific geometry differs by project type, but each one still reduces to a measured area or run, a waste allowance, and a purchase-unit conversion.
Comparisons matter here as much as they do indoors: two decking products, two paver patterns, or two fence panel systems can produce meaningfully different material counts and costs from the same footprint, and the honest comparison has to hold waste, package rounding, and scope constant across both options rather than comparing a rough estimate for one against a precise one for the other.
